In celebration of National Family Fun Month, the Florida physicians at Weight Success Centers are offering five fitness tips for Florida families. A quality fitness routine can help you and your loved ones maintain good health, while also having a whole lot of fun.
1. Play Your Way to Family Fitness
Wonderfully, playing outside can be physically and emotionally rewarding for all ages. Depending on ages and interests, your family may enjoy basketball, a tennis match, or a game of hide-and-seek if there are young kids involved. Best of all, it is not just fun and games – because any physical activity raising your breathing and heart rate for at least 1 hour can help strengthen your bones and muscles.
2. Dive Into Water-Based Physical Activities
In Florida, there is no shortage of water activities for the family to enjoy. The CDC states that just 2.5 hours of water-based (or other forms of) physical activity per week has health benefits no matter your age. In addition to swimming in the pool, consider a day of paddleboarding, kayaking, or canoeing to build muscles and maintain a healthy weight. It is fun to get fit while enjoying Florida’s lakes, rivers, bays, channels, causeways, the Gulf of Mexico, or the Atlantic Ocean.
3. Be Entertained While Burning Calories
Remember, you do not have to be sweating in a gym or running a marathon to burn calories. Your family can burn calories by having fun. Florida offers countless destinations, nature preserves, and scenic spots to walk and explore. If your family prefers the indoors, consider walking around a history museum or an art exhibit instead of going to the movies or other activities that only involve sitting.
4. Enjoy Florida Adventures to Achieve Fitness
By seeking out new adventures, your family can be on their way to achieving fitness. Florida is home to some of the best amusement parks in the world, and you would be amazed how many calories you can burn exploring a Florida theme park. To boost your fitness success, be sure to avoid overeating those concession-stand treats, fried foods, and other junk foods with empty calories.
5. Pack Nutritious Foods for Family Outings
Oftentimes, family fun is associated with less-than-nutritious foods, like trips to the ice-cream shop or buttered popcorn at the movies. Moderation is good, although avoiding temptation altogether could be the key to success. Help your family maintain good nutrition in certain settings by packing convenient snacks like seeds, nuts, cut vegetables, or tasty fruits for your family outings and healthy adventures.
In addition to exercising and eating right, remember that hydration is also important. While you enjoy Family Fun Month this August, be sure to drink at least 8 ounces of water every hour.
