Summer is traditionally a time for swimming, boating, beach adventures, and outdoor sports. Unfortunately, many of these summer activities may have damaging effects on your hair.  Chlorine from the pool, sweat, and too much sunshine can wreak havoc on your haircare efforts. With the right protection and nutrition, however, you may enjoy more nourished hair this summer.

Use Sunscreen to Protect Your Hair from the Sun

Your hair does not have to suffer from the everyday stresses of hot summer weather and outdoor events.  With high-quality haircare products and professional hair treatments available, you can forget that bulky hat.  This summer of 2019 is bountiful with sunscreen products for your hair and scalp. Depending on your hair type, we suggest choosing Broad Spectrum SPF 30 sunscreen-containing hair products including hair care oils for dry hair, lightweight sprays for thinning or fine hair, or non-greasy creams for those with oily hair.  The right SPF products are essential in protecting your scalp and summer locks.

Nourish Your Body to Support Healthier Hair

Much like your body needs nourishment, healthy hair requires certain vitamins, minerals, and other nutrients for maintaining good health.  Vitamins A and B can help promote cell growth to support healthy hair. One of the best B vitamins for healthy hair is Biotin (B7), which can be found in egg yolks, nuts, avocados, and certain meats.  It is also important to ensure you are getting the right amounts of Protein, Iron, Zinc, and other minerals. Omega-3 fatty acids, such as those found in salmon and fish oils, may also be helpful in improving the health of your hair and scalp.  A vitamin-rich diet of summer berries, melons, greens, and veggies will also go a long way in keeping you looking your summer best.

Apply Conditioners and Masks to Revitalize Hair

Remove signs of damage with a leave-in conditioning treatment. There is no shortage of haircare product options at stores and professional hair salons.  We suggest looking for organic and plant-based products for healthy hair, such as coconut oil, argan oil, avocado, and chamomile. Yes, properties in the chamomile plant’s oils do much more than provide a relaxing tea.  Chamomile can aid in haircare, which is why you’ll find it listed in many product ingredient lists. You can also make a simple hair mask at home with bananas and olive oil. We suggest using ripe bananas and Extra Virgin Olive Oil for the most nutrient-rich benefits.  Simply mash a banana with 1 tablespoon of olive oil in a bowl, apply the mixture to your hair, and top with a shower cap for 20 minutes. Then shampoo, condition, and enjoy softer hair. Some people even tout this mask (and variants of it with milk) as helpful for hair growth.
